Washington Initiative 1631, which advocates for applying a tax to carbon corporations, will be included on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Jonathan Villanueva, WSU senior and advocate for I-1631, has been tabling on the mall for support.

“We are asking carbon corporations to pay carbon fees,” Villanueva said.

Corporations release large amounts of carbon into the air, he said. The carbon creates holes in the ozone layer, he said, which creates other problems for the environment.

“Once they pay these fees, that amount of money will be allocated towards more sustainable resources and communities of color,” Villanueva said.

A lot of these corporations use land and resources that are not theirs to use, he said, and they aren’t held accountable for it.

“We should be able to have a greener future for generations ahead of us,” Villanueva said.

I-1631 is a clean air and clean energy initiative for Washington, he said, and would benefit the economy and the community.

“This initiative is sustainable and this will definitely benefit people in the future,” Villanueva said. “I guarantee it.”
