Largent leads Whitman County commissioner race

Incumbent says he will be ‘at peace’ with results after election

Republican incumbent Michael Largent appears to lead in the race for Whitman County commissioner as of Tuesday night’s results at 59.1 percent of the vote, with Democrat John-Mark Mahnkey behind at 40.8 percent.

Largent said it has not been a “nasty campaign” and that he hopes to see Mahnkey more after the campaign. He spent the day of the election by going to a school conference for his son, he said, and will be spending the night with his family.

Largent said regardless of the results, he will be at peace and content with what the voters decide.

Largent said he ran into difficulties with campaigning due to health problems, but is now “on the road to recovery.”

“I would like to thank all the voters in Whitman County,” Largent said, “and thank the people who showed me support.”

Mahnkey said Tuesday afternoon he was “feeling confident” about the election and was very excited. This was his first time running for office, he said.

He had a watch party with the Matthew Sutherland for State Representative campaign at 7 p.m. Tuesday, he said, although the results may not be finalized until later in the week.
