The University of Idaho honored former Pullman High School track star Lauren McCluskey at  the first event of the regular track and field season on Friday.

The previously unnamed meet was renamed the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open.

McCluskey, who grew up in Pullman, was murdered in October while attending the University of Utah. The 21-year-old pentathlete was set to graduate with honors in spring of this year.

Tim Cawley, director of track and field at the University of Idaho, said McCluskey had been a regular at the university’s Kibbie Dome and had competed with and against several current UI athletes.

“She was such a part of the Palouse track family,” he said. “We thought it would be a nice tribute to help celebrate her life in this area.”

Attendees gathered to remember McCluskey with a moment of silence and a memorial video tribute before the 60 meter hurdle event, Cawley said.

The hurdles and the high jump were some of McCluskey’s best events . She was a Washington State Champion in high jump and holds a Pullman High School record in the 100 meter hurdle.

Organizers have yet to decide if the event will be renamed the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open for years to come, Cawley said, or if the event will be renamed every year to honor other community members and athletes.
