Sophomore Madison Odiorne takes a shot. Women’s golf will tee off today in Rancho Santa Fe.

After finishing third last week in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, the WSU women’s golf team traveled to the west coast to compete in San Diego State University’s March Mayhem.

The Cougars will compete at the Rancho Santa Fe’s The Farms Golf Club on March 20 – 22. Teams will endure a 72-hole match play format on a 6,211-yard track at a par-72. The competitors will complete 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes each Tuesday and Wednesday underneath the Southern California sun.

Last week, junior Alivia Brown recorded her third top-five finish of the season when she tied for third after shooting 4-under (212) through three rounds of the Hawaiian tournament. Senior Cherokee Kim tied for 20th after carding a three-round score 220 (+4) while freshman Marie Lund-Hansen finished one stroke behind Kim at five-over par (221) and tied for 23rd.

The Cougars are entering the tournament seeded 10th, based on their 60th place Golfweek ranking last week, and will face off against the No. 7 seeded Pepperdine in the first round, ranked 43rd place by Golfweek.

The winner of each matchup will move on to the Championship bracket while the others move to the Consolation bracket. In the second round, the Cougars will face either No. 2 seeded Northwestern or No. 15 USF.

Joining WSU along with the host-school San Diego State in the 16-team field will be Arizona, BYU, California, Fresno State, Idaho, Iowa, New Mexico, Northwestern, Old Dominion, Pepperdine, San Francisco, UNVL, USC and Yale. USC, Northwestern and Arizona are currently the top three seeds for the tournament respectively after being ranked in the top-25 by Golfweek.

WSU Head Coach Kelli Kamimura is optimistic about this season as the golfers continue to persevere and compete successfully.

“The start to the spring season has been very beneficial,” Kamimura said. “We have experienced some growing moments which we have learned from to help us improve. The players continue to focus on improving their process and getting better every day.”

Round one will tee off on at 7:30 a.m. on Monday in Rancho Sante Fe, California. Live results will be posted at birdiefire.com.
