WSU junior outside hitter Casey Schoenlein attempts to block a spike from an Arizona State player on Nov. 11 at Bohler Gym in the Cougars eventual 3-0 win.

The No. 25 WSU volleyball team (22-12) fell to No. 3 Wisconsin in straight sets on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to end its season in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Badgers (27-4) won the match in set scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-17. The Cougars’ 22 wins this season is the highest total the program has had in 14 years and tied for fifth-most all-time.

Senior outside hitter Kyra Holt led WSU with 12 kills while sophomore middle blocker Taylor Mims had five kills and one block. Holt, who earned Pac-12 First Team honors for the second consecutive year, ends her career at WSU as the program’s leader for most points scored.

“Wisconsin is a good team but we just kind of fell off on the blocking part and we just needed to be more disciplined,” Holt said after the match.

Junior outside hitter Lauryn Gillis led Wisconsin’s offensive attack with 12 kills and four blocks while junior outside hitter Kelli Bates added 10 digs. Senior middle blocker Haleigh Nelson paced the Badgers defensively with seven blocks while senior setter Lauren Carlini pitched in five.

The Badgers hit .248 for the match while WSU was held to a .067 hitting percentage. The Cougars were thoroughly controlled on both sides in the match, as Wisconsin clocked 42 kills to their 29 and out-blocked WSU 13 to six.

“First of all, Wisconsin is extremely good,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “I’m proud of this (WSU) team for how far we’ve come into the second round, but Wisconsin is a fabulous team.”

Greeny also said that Wisconsin plays a similar game to that of fourth-ranked and Pac-12 champion Washington and that the Badgers are a good enough team to win the NCAA Championship.
