WSU slides further with home losses to OSU, UO

WSU junior outside hitter Casey Schoenlein had a career-high 14 kills versus Oregon State in Friday’s 3-1 loss to the Beavers.

The No. 23 WSU women’s volleyball team suffered two more losses this weekend at home in Bohler Gym to Oregon State and Oregon.

WSU (17-9, 7-7) fell to Oregon State (10-14, 3-10) 3-1 on Friday in set scores of 19-25, 27-25, 25-23 and 25-19. The Cougars defeated the Beavers 3-1 in Corvallis on Oct. 7.

“I thought we came out really well, and were really aggressive from the beginning,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “It was tough to lose that second set, it was so close.”

Senior outside hitter Kyra Holt, the Cougars’ most consistent offensive weapon, led Friday’s match with 21 kills, five digs and five blocks. Junior outside hitter Casey Schoenlein had a career-high of 14 kills and contributed two blocks as well. Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Mims also spearheaded the Cougars’ offensive output with 13 kills at an impressive .750 for the match.

Junior Mary-Kate Marshall, the Beavers’ own powerhouse outside hitter, led OSU with 18 kills, two aces, seven digs and four blocks. Senior outside hitter Lila Toner followed with 10 kills and five blocks while freshman middle blocker Serena Bruin had a match-leading nine blocks.

The Beavers out-blocked WSU 17.5 to 14, a rare occurrence for a WSU defense that leads the NCAA in blocks per set (3.38). However, WSU’s offense out-hit OSU 59-53 in the match. Hitting percentages were nearly even for both teams, with OSU hitting .221 and WSU .220.

On Sunday, WSU lost a heartbreaker to the Oregon Ducks (17-6, 10-4) in five sets. After losing the first two sets to the Ducks, the Cougars came out of the locker room swinging with aggression and speed that was absent from their recent matches and start of the contest to win the next two sets and force a deciding fifth set.

However, it was too little too late, as Oregon won the fifth set and the match 15-8.

Greeny switched up the starting lineup to begin the match and added in substitutions throughout the contest. Senior outside hitter Hailey Bethune, sophomore middle blocker Ella Lajos, senior defensive specialist Tani Stephens and sophomore outside hitter Julia Cubbedge each started their first Pac-12 match on Sunday.

“I think it worked for the most part,” Greeny said of the lineup change. “You never know. I think that’s what we need, some other people coming in to shake things up. You definitely can’t do it with just a couple people. It has to be a whole team effort.”

Holt tallied her 47th double-double with 16 digs and 15 kills while Bethune clocked in eight kills of her own. Mims, Lajos and Schoenlein each chipped in seven kills and junior setter Nicole Rigoni recorded a double-double as well with 17 assists and 10 digs.

Oregon sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide led the Ducks with 20 kills while junior outside hitter Taylor Agost had 12 and freshman middle blocker Ronika Stone added 11. Senior middle blocker Kacey Nady led Oregon with four blocks and the Ducks out-hit WSU .250 to .201.

“I just don’t think we were being very aggressive,” Greeny said. “I think it was just that comfort zone of same old, same old. And that’s when we switched the lineup a little more than in the third set and it worked. I just said ‘hey, we need to fight.’ And I think, especially Kyra Holt, came out more aggressive than she had been in the first two sets, and our right sides also did well.”

WSU is home again next weekend, taking on Arizona State (9-17, 2-12) at 7 p.m. on Friday and Arizona (16-10, 8-6) at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Sunday’s match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
