Beavers, Ducks follow the Oregon Trail to Pullman

Volleyball Head Coach Jen Greeny looks at the scoreboard in a game against Stanford on Sept. 30.

Losing five of its last seven matches, the No. 23 WSU women’s volleyball team comes home this weekend to compete against Oregon State and No. 20 Oregon in Bohler Gym.

The Cougars (17-7, 7-5) currently sit in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Pac-12 and the team is looking to reverse course and return to playing at the level it began the season with.

“I think it’s great this time of year to be home, six out of our eight games are in Bohler Gym,” WSU volleyball Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “With football weekends going on, I think it’s great that the fans can come and watch some great Cougar volleyball and some Pac-12 action.”

Bohler Gym is known as one of the toughest venues in both the Pac-12 and west coast to play in, and WSU is looking to channel the crowd’s energy to help regain its offensive aggressiveness displayed at the start of Pac-12 play. The Cougars also have the luxury of playing six of their final eight regular season matches at home.

The Beavers (9-14, 2-10) snapped a seven-match losing streak on Sunday against Arizona. Junior outside hitter Mary-Kate Marshall clocked in 17 kills and senior outside hitter Lila Toner pitched in another 10 to help OSU out-hit UA .213 to .195.

WSU defeated the Beavers 3-1 in Corvallis on Oct. 7 and though the Cougars dominated the final three sets in the match, OSU flashed the ability to capitalize on WSU’s offensive errors.

“Our offense hasn’t been great in the past couple of weeks,” Greeny said. Even though we’re playing great competition that’s a little bit on ourselves and especially that last match against Cal, we made far too many hitting errors. We have to get back in the gym and figure that out, the connection between our setters and hitters especially and being able to stay aggressive.”

The Ducks (15-6, 8-4) defeated Arizona State on Sunday to up its Pac-12 win total to eight matches and travel with OSU to Washington this weekend. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide led the Ducks in their most recent match with 19 kills while senior middle blocker Kacey Nady had four blocks.

WSU looks to redeem itself after getting swept by UO in Eugene on Oct. 9 in the match that started its recent string of losses.

“There’s always pressure, whether you’re winning or losing,” Greeny said. “We’re in the Pac-12 conference division in volleyball. We tend not to think or talk about that really, just try and get better every single day for the next teams coming in.”

WSU faces OSU at 7 p.m. today and takes on UO at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Sunday’s matinee with the Ducks will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
