Cougars wrap up fall season in Seattle

The WSU women’s rowing team took on rivals Washington and Oregon in Seattle on Sunday at the Head of the Lake regatta. The Cougars begin spring competition on March 25.

The WSU women’s rowing team concluded its fall season on Sunday at the Head of the Lake regatta in Seattle.

The regatta was hosted by the University of Washington and featured seven other schools in addition to the two rivals.

Stanford, Oregon, Gonzaga, Seattle University, University of Portland, Western Washington University and University of British Columbia also competed in the regatta.

“Everyone raced competitively today,” Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said in an interview with WSU Athletic Communications. “We are looking forward to strong winter training and will be excited to get back on the water in spring competition.”

In the Championship Women’s eight-plus races, WSU’s varsity eight crew finished in second place with a time of 18:05.330. The crew was comprised of redshirt seniors Ieva Adomaviciute, Nicole Hare and Chloe Rogers; senior Mihaela-Teodora Berindei; juniors Lucie Weissova and Jenna Mangiagli as the coxswain; sophomores Paige Danielson and Jess Brougham; and freshman Ivy Elling Quaintance.

Taking first place in the race was UW’s varsity eight A crew in a time of 17:57.547. Stanford’s varsity eight took third place at 18:11.069 and the Huskies varsity eight B team came in fourth place with a time of 18:20.707.

In the Women’s Collegiate JV eight-plus regatta, UW took first place while the Cougars nabbed second place. UW finished in 18:36.317 and the Cougars came in 14 seconds later at a time of 18:50.555. Stanford’s second varsity eight came in third with a time of 18:52.937.

Propelling the WSU’s second varsity eight boat were seniors Jessi Howe, Lori VerMurlen and Isabella Watt; juniors Ellie Burg as coxswain, Jessica Newson, Kristel Tohu and Emily Thomson; sophomore Taija Thompson; and freshman Renee Kemp.

The Cougars took first place in the Women’s Collegiate 3V eight-plus with a 19:35:956 finishing time. Rowing for the Cougars third varsity eight boat were seniors Jill Hannink and Brittany Brooks; junior Jenna Kennedy; sophomores Sara Brevick and coxswain Hannah Welzbacker; and freshmen Samantha Eilers, Rosalina Torcivia, Kamila Ondrackova and Sue Yu.

UBC took second place in the race after finishing less than one second behind WSU. In third place was Portland’s crew with a time of 21:25.362.

This was the last regatta that the WSU women’s rowing team will compete in until spring competition starts in March. The Cougars first spring regatta is on March 25 against Gonzaga at the Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.
