The WSU men’s basketball team extended its winning streak to five with an 87-59 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Saturday in Beasley Coliseum.

WSU (8-4, 0-0) did not trail to Incarnate Word (3-9, 0-1) throughout the whole game. The last time WSU trailed to an opponent was during the first half against New Mexico State University on Dec. 7.

Junior guard Isaac Bonton led the Cougars scoring 19 points and dishing out six assists, both tying WSU career highs. Bonton also grabbed 12 rebounds, which is a new WSU career high and an individual high for WSU this season.

Bonton scored 14 points with under nine minutes left to play in the first half.

Five different Cougars scored double-digit points, including four starters and junior forward Tony Miller off the bench. Sophomore forward CJ Elleby scored 13 points on 5-13 shooting, which marks the fourth time this season that he scored fewer than 20 points.

WSU held a 46-27 lead at halftime after posting first half season highs in field goal percentage, 3-point percentage, and rebounds. Incarnate Word trimmed this lead down to 15 with 12:17 left in the second half. This was the smallest second half score differential between the Cougars and Cardinals.

Senior forward Jeff Pollard and sophomore forward Aljaž Kunc joined double-digit point totals during the second half. Kunc accomplished new career highs in 3-pointers made with three and total rebounds with eight, and he finished the game with 13 points.

With a minute and a half left in the game, all of WSU’s starters found their way to the bench. WSU finished with a new season high in total rebounds with 53 and 3-point percentage of 38.9.

The Cougars will finish their non-conference schedule against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions at 5 p.m. Dec. 29 in Beasley Coliseum. The game can be viewed on the Pac-12 Networks.
