Imagine a 75-year-old man who devoted his life to the spoken word being diagnosed with esophageal cancer. His only desire is to have his voice heard, but he can hardly speak.
Well-known British actor Julian Sands will perform “A Celebration of Harold Pinter” at the Jones Theatre in Daggy Hall tonight.
In 2005, Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter approached Sand to prepare a selection of his poems for a special presentation in London. Pinter committed to giving a charity recital of a selection of his work, but his advancing illness impaired his voice, and he was unable to deal with the acoustics of the venue, Sands said during an interview with Charlie Rose.
A bond was established between the two artists. Sands gives a very personal voice to Pinter’s words. This collaboration became the foundation for a colorful, humorous and fascinating solo show directed by John Malkovich, Sands said. Although Pinter passed away in 2008 from liver cancer, Sands intends to continue Pinter’s legacy.
“What it sets out to reveal is Harold Pinter: his intelligence, his wit, his politics, his philosophy, his love and his humanity,” Sands said.
Harold Pinter was a British poet, screenwriter and actor. Pinter developed a unique playwriting style where he used subtlety and understatement to convey the thoughts and feelings of his characters. His work has inspired generations of playwrights, event organizer Gail Siegel said.
Sands is frequently seen in national and international films, on stage and on television. He is popular for his roles in “Oceans 13” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” On TV he can also be seen on the shows “Dexter,” “Smallville” and “Ghost Whisperer.”
“He is arriving in Pullman after filming a new movie in London this past week,” Siegel said.
The performance will feature reserved seating. Tickets are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors and $10 for non-WSU students and youth. Admission is free for WSU students with ID. Tickets will be available at the Daggy Hall box office two hours before the performance.
Julian Sands will perform “A Celebration of Harold Pinter” at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Jones Theatre in Daggy Hall. The production includes mature language.
