WSU upended in Gibb Pool to open its season

The WSU women’s swimming team fell to the No. 6 USC Trojans 161-96 on Friday in its first jump into Gibb Pool for the 2016 season.

Taking on the reigning Pac-12 champions, sophomore IM and backstroker Jasmine Margetts was the leading scorer for the meet, bringing in 17 points for the Cougars. The Trojans claimed 12 of the 14 events in the meet.

WSU claimed its first win in the 100-yard breaststroke when freshman Angela Mavrantza touched the wall at 30.69, .14 seconds ahead of USC senior IM/breaststroke Kelsey Kafka. The win added nine points onto the board for the Cougars.

USC dominated the first four events of the night in the 200-yard medley relay, 1,000-yard free, 200-yard free and 100-yard backstroke.

The WSU 200 medley relay team, senior freestyle Haley Rose Love, Mavrantza, junior breaststroke/butterfly Anna Brolin and freestyle Hannah Bruggman, scored four points with a second place finish.

Freshman freestyle Ryan Falk clocked in at 10:24.08 in the 1,000-yard free in her first collegiate event, finishing five seconds behind USC sophomore freestyle Elizabeth Stinson. Stinson edged out Falk once more in the 500-yard free where she came in at 5:02.29, .8 seconds faster than Falk’s 5:02.37 finish.

Margetts came in second in her first event of the night in the 200 butterfly. Her 2:03.96 finish was two seconds behind USC freshman butterfly Catherine Sanchez who finished at 2:01.72.

Margetts grabbed another four points for WSU in the 200-yard backstroke after coming in three seconds behind USC sophomore backstroke Hanni Leach who took first at 2:00.18.

The 200-yard individual medley gave Margetts her first win of the night when she touched the wall at 2:08.10. WSU sophomore freestyle Ciera Kelly and backstroke Penny Nichols finished behind Margetts and added a combined seven points to the Cougars team score.

A WSU victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay closed out the meet. The team of Bruggman, Love, Falk and senior freestyle Hailey Johnson finished at 3:31.91.

The Cougars will have a break before jumping back into the water to take on Stanford in Palo Alto on Oct. 20.
