Bring out the brooms: Winning streak up to four

he No. 17 WSU women’s volleyball team is on a roll after four consecutive wins in the past two weeks, three of them against top-10 opponents.

After defeating No. 4 University of Washington and No. 9 UCLA on the road last week, the Cougars (14-2, 4-0) came home and continued their winning streak against No. 9 Stanford and University of California this weekend.

The Cougars defeated Stanford (9-3, 3-1) for the first time since 2002 in a tight five-set match in set scores of 25-15, 17-25, 26-28 and 15-8.

“It is a huge win against a really good Stanford team,” WSU volleyball Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “I felt that our team was really resilient tonight. There were some ups and downs, but we stuck with it. And to get it done in five, it is just a tremendous victory for this team, and another step in the right direction.”

Senior outside hitter Kyra Holt led the match with 17 kills and five blocks and became WSU’s all-time leading scorer with a total of 1,726 points in her career.

Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Mims led the team with eight blocks while fellow sophomore middle blocker Claire Martin contributed seven blocks and junior outside hitter Casey Schoenlein had five blocks along with a career-high of 12 kills. Mims and sophomore outside hitter McKenna Woodford matched one another with 13 kills.

WSU freshman libero Alexis Dirige led the match with a career-high 26 digs. The Cougars had 62 digs overall while Stanford had 54.

“We’ve always had the passion,” Holt said. “It’s just believing in ourselves and transitioning from practice to the game, and that’s all we did. We just had to make adjustments to their adjustments later in the game and I think we did that perfectly, that’s why we won. It means everything, having the support from everyone in Pullman is just awesome, and it really helps us.

Less than 48 hours later, the Cougars went up against the University of California (6-8, 0-4) and dominated the Golden Bears in a sweep with scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22. Holt led the team with 12 kills, while Woodford had 10 kills and Mims had eight.

Martin and Schoenlein each had seven kills. WSU had 10 team blocks against California’s two and won the digs battle with 26 digs over its 20.

“I thought I played pretty good, but there is always room for improvement,” Martin said. “I didn’t get those blocks by myself and I didn’t get those kills by myself so I am thankful for my teammates. We have worked a lot last year and in the spring, so it all came together this season. We have improved on hitting, digging, blocking, passing, and serving and it has gotten us to the position we are in now. It is fun to go to practice now; it was fun last year but it is more fun this year.”

WSU travels to Oregon this week to face Oregon State (8-7, 1-3) Friday and No. 21 Oregon (11-2, 4-0) Sunday. Friday’s match will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
