Weaver’s late goal nets first conference win for WSU

The WSU women’s soccer team recorded its first conference win on Sunday after taking down the Arizona State Sun Devils 2-1 in double overtime off a goal by freshman forward Morgan Weaver.

It was the Sun Devils’ second-consecutive overtime match, having gone into double overtime with Washington on Thursday. ASU edged out the Huskies with a goal in the 105th minute for a 3-2 victory. The match marked the first conference win for the Sun Devils.

The win brought the Cougars record up to 1-4-0 in the Pac-12, who struggled to start Pac-12 play and lost 4-0 at home on Thursday to the University of Arizona.

Unlike Thursday’s game against the Wildcats, the Cougars wasted no time in attacking the Sun Devils’ defense, taking shots on goal in the first several minutes of play.

The duo of senior forward Kaitlyn Johnson and Weaver put heavy pressure on ASU’s back line. Weaver nearly scored off an assisted header in the 17th minute but sent the ball high.

A goal off a penalty kick put the Sun Devils on the board in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 lead. WSU attempted to respond with multiple long distance shots on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net. By halftime, the Cougars had outshot ASU 7-5, but the Sun Devils remained ahead 1-0.

Corner kicks gave the Cougars many scoring opportunities throughout the match, but no one was able to capitalize. WSU’s offense maintained its presence on ASU’s end of the field, firing several shots on the Sun Devils’ goalkeeper.

In the 83rd minute, freshman forward Katie Jones sent a low shot from the top of the box past the goalkeeper for an equalizing goal that sent the two teams into overtime. The Cougars controlled the first overtime period, with sophomore forward Alysha Overland sending multiple shots toward the ASU goal.

In the first minute of the second overtime, Weaver launched a ball from outside of the goalie box to the left of ASU’s goalkeeper into the net for the winning goal.

The Cougars look to continue their winning momentum against the University of Utah at 6 p.m. on Friday in Salt Lake City.
