Multiple swimmers break personal, school records

The WSU swim team finished eighth in the Pac-12 Championships this weekend.

Although the team finished last, the Cougars (3-7, 0-5) beat their last year’s score by 111.5 points. Several Cougars broke both personal and team records this weekend as well.

On day three, sophomore Keiana Fountaine broke the school record in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.14, beating the previous record by .56 seconds. The next event, sophomore Lauren Burckel broke the school record in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.89, beating the previous record by .03 seconds

Senior Ryan Falk recorded a WSU top 10 time in her leg of the 800 yard freestyle relay on day one with a time of 1:48.68. Falk and sophomores Emily Barrier, Payton Bokowy and Fountaine finished the relay placing seventh.

The Cougars finished in seventh place overall at the end of day one ahead of the University of Utah.

Burckel and junior Chloe Lawson both achieved two WSU top 10 times in the second day of competition. Burckel’s time of 1:59.41 in the 200 yard individual medley moved her up to second place in WSU history. She was .07 seconds away from breaking the school record.

Larson moved to third overall on the WSU top 10 times with a 22.64 second finish the 50 yard freestyle.

The Cougars wrapped up day four by breaking more school records.

Fountaine broke her own school record in the 100 yard freestyle preliminaries by .40 seconds with a time of 49.28. In the finals, she finished 15th overall with a time of 49.79.

Larson also broke her own personal record in the 100 yard freestyle preliminaries by .10 seconds with a time of 49.63. She finished 23rd overall with a time of 49.86.  

Junior Taylor McCoy came close to breaking the school record in the 200 yard backstroke. McCoy recorded a time of 1:56.53, .18 seconds away from breaking the school record.

In an interview with WSU athletics, head coach Matt Leach said that he was happy with the team’s performance at the Pac-12 Championships, and the program is headed in the right direction.

“To finish off today with a bunch of lifetime best times, two new school records and ending with 111.5 more points than we did last year, it shows you where our program is going,” Leach said.
