Women’s soccer to face No. 13 Santa Clara

WSU will take on No.13 Santa Clara Thursday on the Lower Soccer Field. It will be Santa Clara’s first time on the road this season after two victories at home last week.

Last Friday the Cougars fell 2-1 to No.16 BYU in a tight match that sent the teams into double overtime. Senior forward Kaitlyn Johnson put WSU on the board in the first half with an upper-left corner shot past BYU goalkeeper Rachel Boaz.

BYU senior forward Ashley Hatch equalized the score when an attempted shot bounced off the back of a WSU defender and past sophomore goalkeeper Ella Dederick. The score was 1-1 when regular time ended.

Hatch went on to secure the victory for BYU in double overtime with a goal in the last five minutes of the game.

While it was a tough loss for the Cougs, the match did break a record for attendance. More than 2,600 fans were in attendance for the home opener, the most people at a match in the history of Cougar soccer.

“The main focus is first of all is we’ve got to rebound,” Head Coach Todd Shulenberger said. “It was a good game but a tough game.”

With the Cougars looking for redemption, the Broncos will be looking to continue their hot streak. Santa Clara took down No.11 USC 3-2 in overtime after junior defender Kellie Peay knocked it into the net in the 97th minute of play.

The Broncos found themselves in overtime once more when they played No.21 University of California, Berkley later that week. The game remained scoreless until the 107th minute when senior forward Jenna Roering made the winning shot.

“His teams are very prepared.” Shulenberger said. “They beat two very good teams that arguably are one of our top two opponents in this conference, we know they are going to be ready.”

WSU and Santa Clara have not met on the field since 2012 when the Broncos triumphed 3-0 over the Cougars in California. All three of Santa Clara’s goals were made in the second half of the game.

The match will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday on the Lower Soccer Field in Pullman.
