From staff reports

The WSU men’s golf team is off to a great start after the first and second round on Monday, in the Seattle University Redhawk Invitational at the scenic Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Washington.

The Pac-12 schools are currently dominating the leaderboard, and show no signs of letting up. In-state rival No. 27 Washington is leading the tournament after finishing the first two rounds with (+38), followed by WSU (+49). Rounding out the top three is Oregon State, who ended the day with a (+50).

The Cougars, who have been struggling lately, had an impressive day. Across the board, the Cougars are playing terrific golf with three players in the top-25. Chambers Bay Golf Club, the course that hosted the 2015 U.S. Open is known for its difficult links style, which is often seen in Scotland.

The level of difficulty the course provides didn’t seem to affect freshman AJ Armstrong, who had a stellar first two rounds, which places Armstrong tied for third. Through the first two rounds, Armstrong shot an (+8, 134) overall. Armstrong is only one stroke back from leader entering the final round Tuesday.

Not far behind Armstrong is senior Evan Omelia. Omelia, who posted a (+11, 149) in the first two rounds, is currently in 10th place. Entering the final round, four strokes back from the leader, Omelia will have the opportunity to really jump up the leaderboard Tuesday.

Freshman Aaron Whalen, who also managed to crack the top-25 is in 22nd place after shooting a (+13, 147) on the day. Whalen is only two strokes back from Omelia.

Sophomore Derek Bayley is currently in 42nd place after carding a (+17, 147) and senior Bhurinat Songpaiboon posted a (+26, 160) on the day.

Sophomore Zach Anderson, who is playing in the tournament as an individual, shot a (+14, 142).

The tournament will start its third and final round at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Live scoring updates will be available on birdiefire.com.
