Women’s golf ropes in third place finish at Cowgirl Classic

The WSU women’s golf team took third place this weekend at the Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Arizona.

The Cougars shot for a final score of 885, landing them 21 over par in the team’s highest finish since October. The University of Idaho claimed the first place title going +9 after three rounds of competition. Santa Clara took second place ahead of the Cougars with a final score of 881.

WSU came out ahead of the University of Nevada who shot for 24 over par.

Sophomore Alivia Brown was a low scorer for the Cougars, tying for ninth place as an individual among Boise State junior Genevieve Ling and Idaho freshman Michelle Kim and senior Cassie McKinley. Brown scored a 73 in Tuesday’s round following her prior scores of 76 and 71.

Junior Cherokee Kim finished out the classic tied for 13th place after shooting for +5 at 221. Kim had her best day of the classic on Tuesday after scoring a 73 on 18 holes.

Three Cougars tied for 15th place among University of Montana senior Hayley Bingham. WSU seniors Nani Yanagi and Monica Huang and freshman Madison Odiorne all shot for a final score of 222, six over par.

Santa Clara junior Annie Freman took first place going for -9, a final score of 207. Freman scored two 70’s on Monday and finished out Tuesday at 67, five under an 18-hole par.

Competition will resume again for the Cougars at the PING/ASU Invitational on April 8 and 9 in Tempe, Arizona.
