Tennis to travel to Arizona to face UA, ASU

From staff reports

Adjusting to the heat of an Arizona spring can be hard to do, but the Cougars have found themselves on a hot streak.

The No. 62 Cougars are currently 17-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play, but they are playing with an enormous amount of swagger due to a four-match win streak that includes Pac-12 wins against Utah and Colorado.

Sophomore Donika Bashota recently passed Elisabeth Fournier for the most singles matches won (34 wins) in a single season and has an impressive 16-4 record in doubles matches, which is second-best in school history.

It is not just Bashota who is playing well, as the team has proved that so far with their record. Freshman Aneta Miksovska has had one of the best freshman performances in school history, while senior Maria Biryukova has moved into eighth place on the WSU all-time wins list (86).

The first match of the weekend is against the University of Arizona, who currently sits in the basement of the Pac-12. Despite what the record says, Arizona is not a team to underestimate.

“There is little that separates good teams from bad teams (in the Pac-12),” Biryukova said.

Head Coach Lisa Hart has liked how the team has performed so far, but does not discredit the challenge of Arizona.

“There’s a lot of parity right now in women’s tennis. Both teams are well coached,” Hart said.

The Cougars left Wednesday morning so they could get used to the conditions they will be playing in.

Senior Lize Leenknecht is the captain of the tennis team and has been a leader for her teammates to look up to.

“I like that we’re going a couple of days early so we can get used to the heat,” Leenknecht said. “All of us are used to playing indoors, but we have played in hotter places on the road.”

The Cougars play Arizona at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and Arizona State at noon on Saturday.
