Four women’s basketball team members named Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mentions

From staff reports

Four WSU women’s basketball student-athletes were selected to the Pac-12 Conference All-Academic honorable mention team this past Thursday.

Mariah Cooks earned the honor for the third-consecutive year while sophomores Bianca Blanaru, Louise Brown and Pinelopi Pavlopoulou made the team in their first year of eligibility. For the sixth time in the past 10 seasons and for the first time since 2012, at least four players have been selected to the Pac-12’s all-academic teams.

Cooks is graduating this spring with a degree in political science and has a cumulative 3.28 GPA. Heavily involved with outreach projects in support of women’s rights and the defense of human trafficking victims, the Santa Maria, Calif., native hopes to become a federal or state judge in the long-run.

In her final season, Cooks was second on the team in scoring, averaging 6.8 points per game and finished the year with 129 rebounds (4.3 per game), second only to freshman center Maria Kostourkova (130). Cooks appeared in 126 games throughout her four years for the Cougs, tied for the third-most in program history, and recorded ninth-most defensive rebounds in school history with 367.

Blanaru, a center from Timisoara, Romania, garnered a 3.02 GPA over the past three academic semesters. She made 19 starts for the Cougs this year and averaged 2.3 rebounds per game and 2.1 points. Appearing in all 30 games, Blanaru also swatted away 22 of the team’s record 120 blocked shots.

A sports management major, Brown also owns a 3.02 GPA. The Melbourne native was a frequent starter for WSU this season, averaging 5.5 points per game and 4 rebounds per game.

Despite having changed her major three times, Pavlopoulou has a team-best 3.69 GPA. Majoring in management information systems, the point guard dished out 58 assists on the year, second only to starter Dawnyelle Awa. The Athens, Greece, native averaged 4.3 points scored per game and shot .474 (54-of-114) from the floor.

Per pac-12.org, to be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must be in their redshirt-freshman season or above and have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average, while participating in at least 50 percent of team competitions.
