Time to shine: WSU swimming heads to the Pac-12 Championships
February 23, 2016
One of the most highly anticipated events of the season has finally arrived for WSU swimming.
The team will travel to Federal Way this week to participate in the Pac-12 Championships. The Cougars are coming off a tight win over the Utah Utes with a final score of 149-145.
The meet will take place over four days. Competition starts Wednesday and will go on all day for the following four days. It will come to a close on Feb. 27.
Last year at the Pac-12 Championships, the Cougars finished in eighth place directly behind the Utes.
WSU also made sure that the Pac-12’s were the highlight of their season as they went on the set 39 season-best times at the championships, 31 of which were also lifetime bests for the Cougars.
At the time senior Loree Olson finished in 15th overall. Olson added total 12 points individually to the Cougars’ final score.
Junior Kendra Griffin also had strong success at the Pac-12’s last year, cutting 16 seconds off her original personal best time. Griffin finished in ninth place overall and put 20 points on the board for WSU.
“I’m very proud of this team,” Head Coach Tom Jager said. “This year has been a great experience for everyone.”
The Cougars have had a successful regular season, tallying eight wins over 12 meets.
Several Cougars were recognized in the academic spotlight for their academic and athletic success. Senior Presley Wetterstrom has been recognized as a second time Pac-12 All-Academic First Team selection as well as making the president’s Honor Roll at WSU.
Seniors Olson and Frederikke Hall also both hold internships in Pullman. Redshirt sophomore Anna Rosen is working toward her goal of designing medical parts that help the inside of the human body.
The Cougars will begin competition Feb. 24 and continue through Feb. 27.
