Senate issues statement urging WSU to reconsider vote canceling spring break
ASWSU disagrees with Faculty Senate’s vote to cancel spring break
October 15, 2020
ASWSU met to discuss various issues relating to COVID-19 on Wednesday evening, including a statement urging Faculty Senate to reconsider its decision to cancel spring break next semester.
The proposed statement presented by Senator Kaye Gill and senate pro-tempore Bailey McCoy, urged the Faculty Senate to reconsider its vote, citing concerns about added stress and “Zoom fatigue” to students.
WSU is evaluating removing the mandatory student stadium fee of $25 per semester because of COVID-19. In a presentation to the ASWSU Senate, WSU Athletics Director Pat Chun said the fee is important to the athletics budget and the university should retain the fee.
“What you see in Martin Stadium isn’t even close to what was in 2006,” Chun said, “and thankfully, passing that referendum really kick-started an era of WSU athletics that allowed the football program to recover and become a top-30 program in the country.”
The ASWSU Senate also officially swore in two senators Wednesday evening.
Lauren Slater, senior political science major, was sworn in as arts and sciences senator and Jelani Christopher, junior political science major, was sworn in as an all-campus senator.
Additionally, the senate also passed an amendment to ASWSU bylaws, clarifying that any senator with involvements that create a conflict of interest in their vote on a particular topic must abstain from voting.
ASWSU Vice President Sean Doster also announced that ASWSU is partnering with Cougar Health Services to put on two flu shot clinics for students.
Both clinics will be at the Chinook Student Center. The first one will be held 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 21. The second will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 23. More information can be found on the Cougar Health Services website.
