Nuthouse brings laughter to Dad’s Weekend
November 6, 2015
“If you and I were in a scene about a pineapple, we would talk about how it represents our relationship, maybe as boyfriend and girlfriend, brother and sister, or just friends. We would see how the pineapple …”
Made up off the top of his head, performer Jimmy John gave an example of the kind of fast-paced, unpredictable performances Nuthouse Improv Comedy is known for. Anything can happen, and it is guaranteed that it will.
Improvisation is the ability to come up with ideas, scenes, or characters quickly, without planning. The performers utilize games and suggestions from the audience and each other to build on ideas and create scenes out of thin air. Minds are at work, spinning the train of thought into comedic circumstances.
Still confused? The Chair of STAGE Theatre, Sarah Tisinger, said: “Nuthouse Improv Comedy puts on shows similar to the popular TV show ‘Whose Line is it Anyway.’ … We do a handful of sketches, skits and games, all of which are right off the top of our heads.”
Given a basic outline, whether it be an action, a phrase, a word or a game, the performers make up scenes on the spot. The performers are drawing from each other and the audience. The goal of the night is to laugh, and the audience will be encouraged to interact with the performers.
“The Dad’s Weekend performances are our chance to reach a different demographic, the community as well as the students,” Jimmy John said.
A different, varied audience means different, varied suggestions from the crowd. No performance will be the same as the last, but it promises an additional perspective.
“Dad’s Weekend is super fun since dads are cool people, we try to use some dad jokes (in the performances),” performer Erin Salle said.
The performers create a kind of synergy together — they play off of each other and will adapt to anything thrown their way. Performing during Dad’s Weekend is tradition for Nuthouse; it is a chance delight in the random. Comedy is the goal, and the performers have practiced to find and manipulate it successfully.
“Nuthouse has had Dad’s Weekend shows since something like 1999,” performer Natassja Haynes, said.
