The League of Women Voters of Pullman will kick-start its 2021 Brown Bag series discussing the book “White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of our Racial Divide” from 12-1 p.m. Jan. 19.

Anne Lewis, LWV voter editor and this month’s event coordinator, said there were two book options she thought about using for the event: “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo and “White Rage” by Carol Anderson. 

Reading “White Rage” can give people a better understanding of racism and history in the U.S., said LWV coordinator Libby Walker. 

Lewis said the book explores the concept of white rage, which is the way white people have oppressed people of color through laws. 

White rage is about protecting the white power structure, she said.

Anderson illustrates how the world could be different if the money put into weaponry or incarceration was invested in expanding education and voting so that everyone has equal access, Lewis said. 

“I think it would have people evaluate events more deeply and also just remind people of the power of the people in charge of the legislature of bureaucracy,” she said.
