The WSU baseball team was picked to finish third place in the Mountain West preseason poll for 2025.
It is the Cougs’ first year playing as an affiliate member of the Mountain West, as the PAC-12 is currently undergoing a two-year hiatus due to realignment in the NCAA.
Last year, WSU finished in tenth place in the PAC-12, but they are expected to improve this year with over 20 new players overhauling the roster.
Junior outfielder Max Hartman was the Cougs lone selection the Mountain West preseason team.
Fresno State University came in first in the preseason poll, receiving six of the seven first-place votes. WSU received the final first-place vote, despite also finishing behind Nevada in the poll.
The Fresno State Bulldogs will be a strong team in 2025. They won the Mountain West tournament last year and returned ten letter-winners from last year’s team. They also lead the conference in preseason team selections, with four. Pitchers Jack Anker and Victor Arreola, along with infielders Murf Gray and Eddie Saldivar have been named to the preseason team. Gray was the 2023 MW Freshman of the Year.
Nevada earned three preseason team selections in pitcher Ethan O’Neal, infielder Michael Ball and outfielder Taylor Holder.
New Mexico, San Diego State and UNLV came in with a three-way tie for fourth place on the preseason poll.
For the Lobos, a pair of outfielders in Will Asby and Khalil Walker have been selected to the preseason team, while the Aztecs are represented by pitcher Omar Serrano and infielder Finley Bates. UNLV is represented on the preseason team by infielder Paul Myro IV.
Air Force Academy, usually a very competitive baseball school, was picked to finish seventh this year and has a single preseason team selection, two-way player Chase Spencer.
San Jose State was picked to finish in last place.
