Snow has overtaken Pullman! Since the first snowfall of the year at the end of January, Pullman has transformed into a winter wonderland!
With the snow, many students might feel like they need to stay inside, warm up a cup of hot cocoa and snuggle up on the couch to watch Netflix. While that might not be a bad idea, there are also plenty of ways students can enjoy the snow, and make the most of the winter weather! Here are five winter sports that anyone can play!
1. Snowball fights
Friendly snowball fights might be the easiest way for students to stay active in the snow. Compete against your roommates, friends or even a rival frat house. Maybe even build forts to shield from the incoming snowballs!
2. Sledding
Wazzu is known for its hills; there is no shortage of epic sledding hills around campus. The best sledding is probably at the hill below Goertzen Hall, where students frequently have brought out sleds and even snowboards to coast down the hill after classes. Just make sure if you’re sledding down a road, you check for cars first, and don’t do anything you are not comfortable with.
3. Ice Hockey
This idea might sound dangerous, but as long as you wear some light padding, you can minimize injuries and maximize fun! You can play in your driveway, or in a local park. Just find an area that’s a little slick, and don’t be afraid to slide around on the ice. You can just wear regular shoes, the ice will do the rest. If you don’t have hockey equipment, you can just play with sticks and a tennis ball.
4. Snow Football
Be honest. If you are a football fan, you have definitely had dreams of catching a game-winning touchdown in the middle of a snowstorm. Snow games are a classic element of the NFL season, and WSU has had its share of snow games as well, most notably the Snow Bowl of 1994, when the Cougars won the Apple Cup amidst a blizzard.
You can relive those childhood fantasies by just…playing a good old-fashioned football game in the snow! In fact, it will be way less painful when you get tackled, because instead of hitting the ground, you’ll fall into the soft cushion of the snow. All you need is a few friends for a great time!
5. Snow Volleyball
You’ve heard of beach volleyball, but get ready to be introduced to snow volleyball!
Similar to beach volleyball, snow volleyball can be played outdoors, either with a volleyball or with a beach ball. Similar to beach volleyball, you will be able to utilize the snow, allowing you to dive more and not worry about getting hurt. The only difference is that you do have to wear shoes. Plus socks, pants, a winter coat…well, you get the point.
And there you have it! Five winter sport ideas that anyone could play to stay more active even in the winter weather! Have fun, stay safe and enjoy the snow!
