WSU Swim has had quite the year. They’ve won meets against Northern Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Air Force, Seattle, Utah Tech and twice against Idaho, culminating in an 8-0 record, their first undefeated regular season in program history.
One by one, as each of their opponents fell to them, Wazzu has built an unstoppable force in the pool.
Now, they are in Houston for the Mountain West Championships.
“As long as we continue to focus on us as a team … results are gonna speak for themselves,” said head coach Russell Whitaker earlier this year.
The results have spoken for themselves. As each meet comes and goes, the Cougars are not only winning; they are breaking records.
Earlier this year against Utah Tech, the Cougs set a Gibb Pool record for the 400-meter medley relay. That was one of three pool records broken in that meet.
They followed that up by breaking six more pool records in their win over Idaho on Jan. 21.
Junior Emily Lundgren has been particularly impressive. She broke the pool records in the 100-breast and 200-medley events against Idaho. Meanwhile, freshman Darcy Revitt added records of her own, in the 100-freestyle and 50-freestyle.
Against Idaho, Wazzu came away with wins in 13 of 14 events. One of the first-time winners was sophomore Hannah Huarte, who won the 1,000-freestyle.
“It was awesome, it’s such a blessing to be able to race with my seniors,” said Huarte after the meet. “I’m so excited to see what we have to do at Mountain West (Championships).”
Assistant coach Austin Pillado was thrilled to see how the Cougs performed against Idaho, which was also the team’s senior night.
“It’s really awesome to send out seniors off on a really high note,” said Pillado. “A lot of these youngsters, they are starting to believe and they are growing with confidence each and every day.”
He said the team is feeling ready for the Mountain West tournament because they have practiced as much as they have. The tournament begins on Wednesday and continues until Saturday.
