Starting the conversation

Hannah Ray Lambert Evergreen reporter November 12, 2013

Feminism, the ‘other F-word,’ will take over the stage at the University of Idaho Women’s Center’s second annual F-Word Live Poetry event.

Katie Noble, administrative assistant for the UI Women’s Center, said the event will be "a way to talk about feminism using a different medium other than just casual conversation. A way for people to express their views of feminism and the issues that we continue to face in society."

Noble said the goal of the event is to raise awareness about feminism.

"There’s a lot of stigma that feminists act a certain way or look a certain way," she said. "When it comes down to it, I think feminism is really just believing in equality between male and female genders.

She said the goal of this event is to help raise awareness about feminism.

The majority of the 12 performers will be college students, including Brett Alan Miller, a graduate student who said he has been slamming for more than three years.

Miller said he saw a poster about F-Word Live and is excited to perform because feminism is a subject he’s passionate about.

"I knew, just from that poster, that this was something I needed to be a part of," Miller said.

He said he believes the audience will see many different perspectives on the still-relevant subject at F-Word.

"Feminism means a lot of different things to different people,"

he said. "Violence toward women on college campuses is as bad as ever, for instance, but it’s not talked about. This is an opportunity to talk about it."

A competitor in the National Poetry Slam in Boston in 2011, Miller said he hopes to continue these conversations, as well as others, through a spoken word club on campus.

"I am encouraging people to go to Wanderers’ Tavern every Tuesday night starting at eight, where they have an open mic," Miller said.

He said he hopes to eventually get enough people interested in spoken word to develop a "slam scene" in Moscow.

F-Word Live will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at the Borah Theater in the Student Union Building. The event is free to students and $5 for non-students.
