Newsroom revs up for fall paper

In May of this year, four editors, all alike in dignity, in fair Pullman where we lay our scene, sat down to plan.

In their hands, coffee. In their backpacks, final essays. In their hearts, a dream.

The dream was one of innovative design, thematic writing, community outreach, and new sections.

This is the last regular installment of The Summer Evergreen of 2015, and from where I sit I think we did what we set out to do.

And we’re excited to carry over our progress into fall. Because guess what? We’re not going anywhere.

Lance Lijewski, current editor-in-chief, will be The Daily Evergreen News editor, and Matthew Brunstetter, current news editor, will be his assistant. Des Marks will continue as our photo editor, and I’ll be retaining the position of managing editor.

Many reporters and photographers are staying with us, including those who got their start this summer, and we’re already getting applications from incoming students we met at Alive! sessions.

(Side bar: if you met us at Alive! and talked about sending an application, send me an email! We met a lot of cool freshmen and transfer students and I want you all on staff.)

This last issue is essentially a roundup of all our (and your!) favorite things from the summer.

We had so much fun sharing photos on social media and receiving photos from our readers this summer. We have some photos we think you’ll enjoy, including cliff-jumpers. Don’t try that at home, kids.

The Access Center sent us a response to our diversity issue that features a graphic paralleling our front cover – but this one has varied body types and includes disability represenation. They also shared information about civil rights movements involving people with disabilities.

We preview another play coming to Pullman, following in the footsteps of others that delighted local audiences (Phantom Tollbooth, anyone?)

We hope you love this last issue. And we hope that you love our fall daily editions.

Those four editors are a little heartbroken as we send this edition to print, but mostly we’re excited for what’s to come.

We already have plans to sit down with the entire fall editorial staff, coffee and new textbooks in tow, to plan.
