An online petition is calling for increased window safety at WSU’s on-campus facilities after a student fell from a second-story residence hall window last week.

WSU freshman Matthew Gray, 18, fell out of the window of his room in Community-Duncan Dunn Hall on Thursday. He suffered severe head trauma and other very serious injuries, according to the petition, started by WSU chemical engineering student Tyler Herman.

The petition asked for improved safety at all university residence halls and approved Greek chapters. It is addressed to WSU President Kirk Schulz, Vice President of Student Affairs Mary Jo Gonzales, Dean of Students Kathy MacKay and Director of Residence Life Edwin Hamada.

About 5,800 people had signed the petition as of Monday evening. It opened at about 8 p.m. Sunday.

“WSU is aware of the petition, and we are reviewing it,” WSU News spokesperson Matt Haugen said.

A GoFundMe page was created to cover Gray’s medical expenses and had raised about $36,500 as of Monday night.
Herman, a WSU student, could not be reached for additional comment.
