Cougars take on Huskies at home

The Washington State University volleyball team will put their undefeated record to the test tonight, taking on nationally ranked No. 2 Washington in Bohler Gym.

WSU (13-0) will kick off its conference schedule with the match against UW (8-0) at 7:30 p.m. The match will air on the Pac-12 Network.

“A rivalry game is definitely something that adds a little more excitement, and we’ve had a pretty quick turnaround to prepare for them,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said in a press conference. “It’ll be nice to play them at home, hopefully have a good crowd and see what we can do.”

The Cougars are coming off a non-conference schedule in which they won each of the four tournaments they participated and sweeping their opponents in nine of their 13 total victories.

Leading WSU offensively is the trio of players including freshman Kyra Holt, junior Ver’Leea Hardaway and junior Jaicee Harris. They have tallied 182, 126 and 120 kills respectively.

Hardaway leads the team and is third in the conference in hitting percentage, currently hitting .439 on her 228 kill attempts this season.

Holt and Hardaway have both been named tournament MVP twice this season.

An area of emphasis this season for the Cougs has been serving aggressively, something Greeny thinks will help in the UW match and many matches throughout Pac-12 play.

“(One of) the keys for us is just to serve tough, try and get them out of their system,” Greeny said. “And then on the other side of that for us to be able to pass well, so we can get the ball to our middles.”

The serving has already seen payoff for WSU this season, with senior Camryn Irwin sitting fourth in the Pac-12 in service aces per set at 0.45 and Holt sitting at seventh with 0.41 aces per set.

Defensively, the Cougars are led by sophomore Kate Sommer and Harris, who have combined for 302 digs of Cougs 13 matches.

WSU has out-hit opponents .312 to .110 this season while out-blocking opponents 113.5 (2.58 blk/s) to 65 (1.48 blk/s).
