ASWSU voted on the chair positions for various committees including the Environmental Sustainable Alliance, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlán and the Asian Pacific American Student Coalition at this week’s meeting.
Stephen Fawcett, the nominee for the ESA, gave a speech regarding his future goals and aspirations as the chair of ESA. He has served as the chair for the past two years and began by summarizing the ESA’s efforts over the past year.
Fawcett said that the ESA worked in tandem with the university to bring the electric Spin scooters and bikes to campus, and are also responsible for the implementation of reusable takeout containers that are currently being used at the Northside dining hall.
Fawcett said that they are also responsible for the creation of the garden at Olympia Residence Hall, as well as the expansion of recycling and composting bins across campus.
For the upcoming school year, Fawcett stated that the ESA’s primary goals are to install water bottle filling stations in Beasley Coliseum, as well as expand the presence of the reusable takeout containers across campus to all the dining halls.
Fawcett was unanimously voted for the position and will now officially serve as the ESA’s chair for one more year.
Next, the position for chair of MECHA, an ASWSU committee that advocates for Chicanx and Latinx students at WSU was voted on by the senate.
Vianey Granados, the nominee for MECHA chair, discussed her experience with volunteering for MECHA and eventually joining the cabinet, having served as the co-chair for the Children of Aztlan Sharing Higher Education Conference last year.
Granados was voted for the position and will now officially serve as the chair of MECHA. The senators then voted on the position of chair of the APASC. The nominee was Sydney Veda, who served as the chair for APASC last year as well.
Veda was voted for the position and will continue to serve as the chair of APASC. The final chair voted on was that of the International Student Council.
The nominee was Tu Le, who also served as the chair for the ISC last year. Le was voted for the position and will continue to serve as the chair of the ISC.
Finally, Senator Tania Henriques announced that three bills were passed through ASWSU’s Internal Affairs Committee and will be sent through the Rules Council before being presented on the Senate floor next Wednesday. Each of the proposed bills are amendatory acts to the ASWSU bylaws, with suggested modifications to Article 803.01, Article 901.00, and Article 309.01.
Vice President Maccabee Werndorf said that ASWSU senate applications are officially closed, with President Luke Deschenes conducting final interviews this week. Werndorf said that nominations will be presented on the senate floor next Wednesday along with the new bills for approval.
ASWSU meets 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday in CUB 204 unless stated otherwise.
