It has been a tradition at the Evergreen to hold a special edition each semester. The Editor-in-chief and their staff pick a central topic that the sections can all work on and bring a vision to light. Previously, the Evergreen had topics including a Magazine Edition, Sex Drugs and Rock & Roll, a Weed Edition and more.
Deciding on a theme, admittedly, took far longer than I originally expected. Rather than knowing what I wanted my staff to do, I only could think of things I did not want to do.
With the Fall ’23 semester nearing its end, there was little time to decide on a theme that the staff could fully care to. With next week being Thanksgiving, the Evergreen will not do a print edition for a one-week break; the time was now.
After some consideration, workshopping ideas and inspiration from previous papers on the wall, we landed on the Palouse: Past and Present. My vision was to tell stories and feature those who currently make the Palouse and Pullman community thrive and those who once walked the streets of WSU’s campus.
Even more so, features included stories of Cougs long gone from the confines of Eastern Washington, with Coug-friendly bars in Seattle being the focus of the story. Exclusive features on WSU athletes, looking back on previous football coaches’ tenures, covering a panel that talked about Lauren McCluskey’s story, a feature on the Dahmen Barn, stories about a man who has played catch every day for over 600 days counting and a dog with a high Instagram following.
We hope you enjoy the paper and enjoy reading all of this week’s content, both in print and online.
