Washington State Magazine will be changing its distribution methods, with most alumni still receiving it through the mail.
This change comes due to increased print production costs and budget reductions, according to a statement from Larry Clark. The Fall issue will continue to mail to most alumni, while the Winter and Spring issues will be automatically sent to alumni who have donated $10 or more to WSU in the last two years, WSU Alumni Association members, paid subscribers and some non-alumni donors.
“The Summer issue will continue to be sent exclusively to WSU Alumni Association members and paid subscribers,” Clark said. “If you wish to receive all issues, you can join the WSU Alumni Association.”
Those who wish to receive the Winter issue should donate $10 or more by October 1, he said. Donations can be to any program or department.
This news coincides with the elimination of annual funding for WSU Press, according to an article from MyNorthwest. A $300,000 cut will be effective at the end of December.
“We’re the only publisher that really covers the Inland Empire, Washington, Idaho, Oregon … and we work a lot with tribal communities to provide an outlet for their stories,” said Linda Bathgate, WSU Press assistant director, in the article. “We feel that this was a very short-sighted, and maybe not a well-thought-out decision … without consideration to the repercussions.”

This is a travesty. Major universities have a university press that distinguishes them as an intellectual entity. Very sad decision.
