The 2024 National Hazing Prevention Week is this week between Sept. 23 and Sept. 27.
“Be the leader. Prevent hazing” is this year’s theme, according to the Hazing Prevention Network.
The focus of this year’s National Hazing Prevention Week is to educate, advocate, promote and fundraise, according the Hazing Prevention Network. In pursuit of this focus, the Hazing Prevention Network has provided webinars, educational resources and media for organizations and individuals interested in participating.
The official National Hazing Prevention Week comes just two weeks after WSU’s Cougar Hazing Prevention Week, which took place from Sept. 8 to Sept. 12.
According to the Center for Community Standards, students are encouraged to get involved beyond the Cougar Hazing Prevention Week by applying to serve on the Hazing Prevention Advisory Committee.
Members of the Hazing Prevention Advisory Committee are expected to review annual reports provided by the Center for Community Standards, review WSU System’s hazing prevention programs, provide advisory notes to WSU’s president and present to WSU System’s leadership councils regarding current hazing prevention initiatives, according to the Center for Community Standards.
Students interested in serving on the Hazing Prevention Advisory Committee are encouraged to apply through a form provided by the Center for Community Standards.
The Center for Community Standards also tracks student organization policy violations at WSU. WSU’s tracking of student organization policy violations is part of the university’s compliance with Sam’s Law.
Sam’s Law is a Washington State law signed by Governor Inslee in March 2022 following the 2019 hazing incident that took the life of WSU first-year student Sam Martinez.
The law requires universities in the state of Washington to publish investigations of hazing in student organizations, including fraternities, sororities, athletic teams and other clubs or groups, according to Northwest Public Broadcasting.
