The WSU swimming season officially kicked off at Friday’s intrasquad meet. With team Crimson swimming against Gray, the race was purely domestic – but where it lacked in competitiveness, it made up for excitement and anticipation from the fans.
Team Gray took the win 241-186, a stark 55-point lead, but both sides of the Coug team showcased some great times consistent with personal records. A few familiar faces were again at the front of the pack for the Cougs.
Junior Dori Hathazi earned herself three wins during the meet. She won the 200m butterfly, the 200m freestyle and finished off by leading the 100m butterfly. Also winning three of the races was junior Emily Lundgren, who succeeded in the 200m individual medley, 200m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke. Both sporting gray colors, the two junior women accounted for 60 points out of the 241 final score.
Freshman Darcy Revitt also put together a strong start to the season with her two wins in the 100m and 50m freestyles. She contributed 26 points to the Gray team win, leaving plenty of anticipation for her first season as a Coug.
Each with one win for the first meet was juniors Lauren Wille (500m freestyle) and Anna Rauchholz (100m backstroke) for team Gray, and sophomore Ariel Wang (200m backstroke) for team Crimson.
Overall the meet served as a warm-up and start to the season’s momentum for the athletes. The main focus was testing the waters for this season’s setup and giving the nine freshmen swimmers a chance to acclimate to competition. Some established swimmers even swam outside of their usual events.
Next week the team flies to Fresno, Calif. for the Fresno State Invite, but will be back Oct. 11 in Gibb Pool to host Northern Colorado for a dual meet at 5 p.m.
