The energy was electric at WSU’s swim meet against Northern Colorado Friday night. The Cougs took a 76-point lead with a final score of 169-93, a great home kickoff to the competitive season.
During the first event, a 400-yard medley relay, the Cougs secured 13 points and established a dominant lead that carried for the rest of the meet. They scored 13 more points in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Junior Emily Lundgren won three of her events, the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, bringing a total of 27 points to WSU’s final score. Freshman Tatum Janning won two of her events, the 1000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, adding 18 points. Also winning two events was junior Dori Hathazi with the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Dori also took an incredibly close second place in the 200 yard butterfly, the only event during the meet that was won by a Northern Colorado athlete. She accounted for 22 points of the final score.
Junior Anna Rauchholz won the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Darcy Revitt won the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Ariel Wang won the 200-yard backstroke and senior Emma Wright won the 100-yard freestyle. Each of them won nine points, respectively, except for Wang and Wright who contributed an extra four points each.
There were 14 events in the meet and the Cougs won 13 of them. After taking fourth place at the Fresno State Invite, WSU’s swim team is on a powerful roll to start out the season. The team has two upcoming meets away from home but will be back in Gibb pool to face off with Seattle University at 5 p.m. on Nov. 8.
