House fire on NW Stadium Way
February 9, 2018
Five people were displaced when a small apartment on military hill caught fire late Friday night.
Pullman and Whitman county fire fighters responded to the blaze at 144 NW Stadium Way at around 8:30 p.m., putting it out in about an hour. They blocked off the street in front of the house, not letting residents or neighbors enter the area until they put out the blaze and secured the premises.
Public Information Officer and Pullman Mayor Glenn Johnson said that some residents had been inside when the fire started, but no one was injured. According to the News release, Pullman police officers were the first to arrive and broke down the door of one of the units to wake up a resident and evacuate the building.
Johnson said the Red Cross would provide emergency shelter for now and two of the five residents were staying with friends.
The bottom portion of the building sustained far more damage, from both water and smoke, but he said they couldn’t provide an estimate of damage or cause until an investigator and building inspectors viewed the site.
Once the scene was safe, he took residents there to view the property, but until authorities can do an inspection, he can’t provide more details for the public.
