Women’s soccer continues win streak

From staff reports

Consistency and grit continue to be the name of the game for the Washington State women’s soccer team.

After drawing with the No. 11 Pepperdine Waves on Friday, the Cougs (3-0-2) took on the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (2-4-0) to wrap up the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic.

The Cougars gave up their first goal of the season, ending the nation’s longest active shutout streak. But the Cougs bounced back quickly and scored three unanswered goals to take the match 3-1.

Hawaii got on the board first when senior Krystal Pascua’s boot from 22 yards out sped past Gurveen Clair in the 36th minute.

From there, it was all WSU.

In the 57th minute, redshirt junior Beau Bremer scored when the ball found her feet in the middle of Hawaii’s box. Bremer received the pass from junior Cara Wagner, giving her the team leading fourth assist on the year.

Kaitlyn Johnson added the second tally to the score sheet in the 72nd minute. The goal was unassisted, as Johnson put the ball in the upper right corner of the net.

Just four minutes later the Cougars put the game away with Beau Bremer’s second goal of the match.

Senior Mesa Owsley took a free kick from outside the box. The shot was saved by the Rainbow Warrior’s goalkeeper Erica Young. However, Young could not contain the rebound and Bremer was in the right place at the right time to slot the ball in the back of the net.

“Credit to our staff for suggesting we needed to make some halftime adjustments,” Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “I thought we controlled the ball for the first 20 minutes of the game and played really well in the second half.”

The Cougars next game is Friday against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Spokane.
