Cougars huddle during a match at the Golden Dome Invite.

From staff reports

The Cougars swept the Golden Dome Invite over the weekend, beating IUPUI (3-0), Notre Dame (3-1), and Western Michigan (3-1) in Notre Dame, Ind.

The Cougars are now 5-1 for the season. Team captains Chelsey Bettinson, Jaicee Harris and Kate Sommer were awarded spots to the all-tournament team. Bettinson totaled 47 kills with a 4.27 kills per set average. Harris totaled 34 kills and 45 digs for the weekend. Sommer tallied 54 digs for the tournament.

“It was a solid team effort and these leaders definitely led on the floor as well as off,” Head Coach Jen Greeny said in an interview with wsucougars.com.

The Cougs entered the weekend with three back-to-back game wins to beat IUPUI (25-21, 25-19, 25-13). Harris and Bettinson tied in kills for the match with 10, followed by outside hitter Kyra Holt with 7.

“I thought everybody did a nice job contributing and we got our block going in the latter part of the match,” Greeny said after beating IUPUI. “I’m very proud of the way we came out and took it in three straight sets.”

Following the first win, the Cougs took on Notre Dame Friday night, winning 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-21, and 27-25). Bettinson led the team in kills with 22 and a .543 hitting average. Kyra Holt followed with 17 kills for the match, and 11 digs. Sommer led in digs with 19 for the match.

“Chelsey’s 22 kills and hitting .543 are big-time numbers and sometimes single-handedly getting points for us when she was in the front row,” Greeny. “That says a lot about her and the team’s passing and setting.”

WSU claimed victory against Western Michigan Saturday afternoon, taking the match 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-19, and 25-23). Holt led the team in kills with 18 and tallied 14 digs. Harris led in digs with 23, followed by Sommer with 17 digs.

Greeny gave credit to Western Michigan after the Cougs took the win, saying they’re a tough team and that doesn’t make mistakes.

“Our depth is a good thing to have and sometimes you need someone to come in and switch that momentum and bring a different look,” Greeny said.

The Cougars travel on Friday, Sept. 12, to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to take on the MTSU Blue Raider Bash. They will compete against Virginia Tech, Belmont and Illinois.
