Sheriff’s office cracks down on boaters under the influence

From staff reports

The marine enforcement division of the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office is on patrol this weekend in search of boaters under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Operation Dry Water is an annual campaign that cracks down on boaters whose blood alcohol contents exceed the state limit of 0.08 percent. Since 2009 the campaign has deployed thousands of officers nationwide from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

The campaign is coordinated by Washington State Parks, which states alcohol was a factor in at least 30 percent of boating-related fatalities in the state since 2004.
