Child rape suspect deemed fit for trial

From staff reports

A former Pullman man accused of child rape has been deemed fit to stand trial after undergoing a mental evaluation.

Richard Devaney is charged with first-degree and second-degree child rape for alleged sexual assaults that occurred in Pullman.

Devaney appeared in Whitman County Superior court on May 23 after his mental evaluation at Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake, Wash.

A nationwide warrant for Devaney’s arrest was issued in December 2013 after he failed to appear at an arraignment hearing.

A local resident recognized Devaney in Texas last fall before reporting him to the Pullman Police Department. Devaney was arrested later that year in Arizona.

His trial is scheduled to take place July 14.
