Cougar women dubbed smart off the court

From staff reports

The WSU women’s basketball team made a habit of breaking records on the court last season, but last week the program received a familiar off-the-court honor.

The NCAA announced on May 7 that the team had earned a Public Recognition Award for the academic performance of its players during the 2012-13 academic year.

In terms of the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR), the team posted a perfect four-year average score of 1,000. It was one of 43 women’s basketball teams honored for their accomplishments.

Head coach June Daugherty said she is honored to coach incredible young women and work within a supportive community.

“I could not be more proud of my Cougs for continuing a 100 percent APR for the fourth year in a row,” Daugherty said in a press release. “We are so appreciative for the dedication of our administration and academic support staff in helping our program continue to achieve greatness.”

The APR score represents the team’s performance over the course of four academic years, the latest score beginning with the 2009-10 academic year. Only student athletes on scholarship affect the score, which measures academic performance by assessing the retention and graduation rates of each program.

The honor is granted to programs whose multi-year APR scores are among the top 10 percent of all NCAA teams.

“It has been a pleasure to follow Coach Daugherty’s basketball team, watching the work ethic and commitment to academics complement the athletic success we have seen this year,” said Ken Casavant, a WSU faculty athletics representative, in a press release. “These young ladies are definitely winners as student-athletes.”
