Women’s rowing team to ‘make some noise’ in Indianapolis

The WSU women’s crew team has rowed itself to national championships.

After a successful season of racing, the team is set to return to the NCAA Division I Rowing Championships in Indianapolis. This is the second consecutive year and fourth time in the last five years that the team has gone.

The team learned it was selected Tuesday, May 20 while watching a video of the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Committee.

“It was stressful and definitely a nail-biter, but in the end everyone was so ecstatic,” said Noel Christiansen, the six seat for the second varsity eight. “It really makes all the hard work worth it.”

The team traveled to Louisville, Ky. on Sunday, May 25 to train and prepare for a few days before leaving Wednesday for Indianapolis, where it will compete against 21 other NCAA teams.

The team sent its first and second varsity eight boats as well as its varsity four boat.

This season has been largely positive for the team.

“I’m really excited for this coming weekend,” said Sarah Wu, the coxswain on the first varsity eight. “We’ve put in some good time on the Snake River, and we’re ready to make some noise.”

The team has competed this year in several events across the country, including invitationals in San Diego and at Clemson University in South Carolina. It also has faced some of the nation’s best teams, including UC Berkeley and UW. Most recently the team took sixth place in the Pac-12 championships, just one point behind USC.

WSU heads into the tournament seeded 12th in the second varsity eight and varsity four, while the first varsity eight is seeded 14th.

“We have spent all year preparing and working hard,” said Megan McDonald, the stroke seat on the second varsity eight. “We are definitely ready to compete.”

The championships will begin Friday, May 30 and end Sunday, June 1 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
