ASWSU welcomes new senate

From staff reports

The incoming batch of ASWSU senators held a crash-course meeting yesterday evening to discuss their first official orders of business.

The 44th ASWSU senate, some members of which carried over from the 43rd, also met with ASWSU President-elect Jared Powell, Vice President-elect LaKecia Farmer, and the executive staff.

“I’m really looking forward to being able to reach out to people I wouldn’t normally come across,” All-campus Senator-elect Adam Crouch said. “Being a senator at large, I really like the possibility to represent as many students as I want.”

Until their terms begin next fall, the authority of the 44th senate is limited to the appointing of committee members and approving the new ASWSU budget.

After a number of introductions from the newly appointed executive staff, the 44th senate commenced its first committee chair confirmations. Senior communication major Alex Siddons was appointed as the general manager of KZUU, Jennyfer Berrueta-Trejo was appointed as the chair of Mecha, and Vanessa Sing was appointed as the chair of the Asian Pacific American Student Coalition.

The Senate also nominated senators Samantha Kieling, Aurelio Guevara, and Dakota Renz for the position of senate pro-tempore, which will be decided next week after an executive session.

Shaylen Sharp, an ASWSU administrative assistant and senator-elect for the College of Education, said she looks forward to contributing her voice in the Senate.

Prior to the meeting of the incoming senate, current members voted in support of a new by-law that allows the pro-tempore, chair and vice-chair of each committee to be paid up to seven hours per week.

ASWSU Vice President Kevin Massimino said this adjustment was granted as a result of the S&A fees recently granted to ASWSU.

“You’re my job, and I love my job,” said ASWSU adviser Dan Maher to the room of senator-elects. “Thank you so much for the privilege of advising you.”
