Syncing up

Adorned in neon and flaunting sports gear, teams of Greek students shook the stage last night in the CUB Senior Ballroom, moving their lips with the words of top-40 hits.

Twelve teams, each comprised of members from two or three fraternities and sororities, performed five-minute choreographed dances at the 2014 Greek Week Lip Sync. The theme of the competition was Olympic sports.

Costumed dancers swung golf clubs and tennis rackets, and Butch the Cougar made an appearance in a suit and tie.

A panel of five judges that included two Crimson girls and former WSU football kicker Andrew Furney judged the teams. First place went to the team represented by Kappa Alpha Theta, Theta Xi and Kappa Sigma.

The lip sync was part of Greek Week, an annual event that involves nearly the entire WSU Greek community.

“It’s a week where Greeks give back to the community,” said Riley Beck, a junior political science major and Greek Week co-director.

The event is sponsored by several Pullman businesses, including South Fork Public House, Munchy’z, Zoe Coffeehouse & Pub, and Sweet Mutiny. Each business contributes a fixed amount for every dollar raised by the chapters.

Proceeds will go to Sojourner’s Alliance, a Moscow-based nonprofit organization that works to provide counseling and affordable housing to low-income people.

On Tuesday, the chapters raised nearly $3,500 during a ‘penny war’ on the Terrell Mall, in which passers-by were challenged to fill money jars for competing groups of Greek students.

Beck said another goal of the event was to strengthen bonds within the student community.

“Greek Week in general is about coming together…and the lip sync, especially, is about friendly competition and getting engaged,” said junior communication major Tracey Kraemer, another co-director.

The lip sync was co-emceed by Carly Othman, a junior communication major who manages public relations for Greek Week. Othman said the lip sync attracted more attention than many of the other events that take place during the week, including the barbecue and house-decorating party that took place on Monday.

“Toward the end people leave the barbecue, but everyone stays for the lip sync, and that’s why I wanted to emcee it,” she said.
