Queens of the court: WSU tennis remains dominant

From staff reports

WSU tennis continued its red-hot start to the season and extended its winning streak to eight matches with victories against two ranked opponents over the weekend.

The Cougars (10-1) dropped the doubles point but took the match with the help of four singles victories in a 5-2 win over No. 66 Fresno State Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts in the Hollingberry Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Maria Biryukova’s trailed by a set at No. 2 against Fresno State’s Rana Sherif Ahmed, but managed to grind out two set wins for the 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 triumph.

Fresno State began the day having captured the opening doubles point and rallied to take the final two matches for a 1-0 lead.

At No. 1, WSU’s Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht continued to play well as they recorded an 8-4 win over Aishwarya Agrawal and Sherif Ahmed.

Biryukova and Olga Musilovich fell to the Bulldogs’ No. 2 duo of Sofya Malysheva and Tanya Murtagh, 8-5, to move the decisive point to No. 3 play.

In the No. 3 match, Fresno State’s Sophie Watts and Anneka Watts defeated Charlotte Koning and Dajana Ognjenovic for the 8-5 win.

In singles, Leenknecht helped the Cougars even the score at one with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Agrawal at No. 3.

Musilovich followed suit, posting the 6-1, 6-1 win over Anneka Watts at No. 4 and Luzina’s 7-5, 7-5 win over Sophie Watts at No. 1, giving WSU a 3-1 advantage.

With the win over the nation’s No. 41 ranked Watts, Luzina posted her third straight season with 20-plus victories.

Fresno State earned its second point after Koning was retired at No. 6.

The match ended with Ognjenovic’s 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-5) victory over Malysheva at No. 5 on the 10-point tiebreaker.

The Cougars dispatched No. 65 San Diego Saturday at The Stevens Center on the Gonzaga University campus.

Ognjenovic and Koning played big roles in the 5-2 match victory, combining for three wins.

The Cougars began the match using their tried and true formula of taking the opening point via doubles wins.

Luzina and Leenknecht got things started at No. 1 with an 8-6 win over Marta Stojanovic and Mikayla Morkel-Brink.

Koning and Ognjenovic then defeated Shani Blecher and Idil Haciraifoglu, 8-6, at No. 3 and clinched the point.

WSU’s No. 2 pairing of Biryukova and Musilovich led in their match before it was halted due to the Cougars already earning the team point.

Following a strong performance against Fresno State in the previous match, Ognjenovic again rolled to victory on Saturday, defeating Morkel-Brink 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

The Toreros tied things up at 2-2 after Stojanovic took down Biryukova 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 2 and Di Filippo record a 6-4, 6-4 win over Musilovich at No. 4.

However, it was all WSU from there as Luzina won her seventh-straight match with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over Blecher at No. 1.

The win pushed Luzina’s overall record to 21-3 and 10-1 in dual matches this season, all occurring at the No. 1 position.

Koning clinched the match with her 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Haciraifoglu at No. 6. Leenknecht overcame a slow start to take down Depenau 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 for the final margin of victory.

The Cougars will return to action Friday to host three matches at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
