Pullman ranked top for safety

Pullman is the fourth-safest city in Washington, according to an annual report by a home and community safety organization.

The “50 Safest Cities in Washington” list for 2014 was officially published earlier this week by an online community publication, The SafeWise Report. On this list, Pullman raked in the No. 4 spot with evidence backed by FBI-collected crime statistics that were used for the report.

The report, which is put together by SafeWise, exists to give readers resources to make their homes and communities a safer place for their families to live.

To create this year’s list, SafeWise went through a process to narrow down hundreds of cities in each state to just 50. They examined all of the crime data from 2012 compiled by the FBI and looked at the city’s population.

Other items they considered included whether the city had recently implemented noteworthy safety initiatives and programs.

Pullman Police Cmdr. Chris Tennant said the police worked with the community to install surveillance cameras on Adams Mall, thus improving safety for Pullman’s nightlife.

According to a Pullman Police Department press release, SafeWise commented on Pullman’s position on the list.

“Boasting no reported murders for the past seven years and some of the best schools in the state, Pullman offers a lot to families looking for a safe, wholesome community to call home,” according to the report.

With no major regular crime activity, the only major problems in the city are noise, garbage and animals. Tennant said these are not necessarily mainstream issues, but they matter to the community.

WSU students agreed that they feel safe in Pullman.

“I am glad I go to school here. I feel really safe, especially on campus, which is something you cannot say about many places,” junior accounting major Megan Osborne said.

Steve Hansen, WSU Police Department assistant chief, said Pullman’s high ranking is “a testament to the work of both the police department and the community.”

SafeWise aims to provide information on safety and home security by providing information on their website, such as safety guides with reviews and comparisons on home security systems.
