WSU rowing sweeps Oregon State University

The No. 15 WSU women’s rowing team returned from Lowell, Oregon, with the Winchell Cup after sweeping Oregon State University while the varsity eight won the Crawford Perpetual Plate for the third year in a row.

“The afternoon provided a timely opportunity to improve specific parts of the morning races, and I think we were successful at that across the board,” Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said via WSU Athletics. “There’s still tons of work for us to do, but we’ve been improving each time out.”

The Cougars raced against the Beavers’ varsity eight in its first race, where WSU beat OSU with a time of 6:43.81. The Beavers finished with a time of 6:51.57.

Rowing for WSU’s varsity eight was seniors Ieva Adomaviciute, Nicole Hare, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Chloe Rogers, Isabella Watt, juniors Jenna Mangiagli (coxswain), Lucie Weissova, Kristel Tohu, and sophomore Paige Danielson.

The second race of the morning was much closer as the Cougars’ second varsity eight beat the Beavers by two seconds.

Seniors Brittany Brooks, Lori Vermurlen, Jessi Howe, juniors Ellie Burg (coxswain), Emily Morrow, Emily Thomson, Jenna Kennedy, sophomore Taija Thompson, and freshman Ivy Elling Quaintance posted a time of 6:58.53.

The Cougar varsity four clinched WSU’s third win of the day with a time of 7:49.17.

Junior Jessica Newson, sophomore Mikaelyn Davis (coxswain), freshmen Kamila Ondrackova, Rosalina Torcivia and Renee Kemp competed in the varsity four race.

WSU’s second varsity four completed their race in 8:24.03, a time good enough to beat OSU by nine seconds. Junior Anna DeTray, sophomores Emily Vandegrift, Madeleine Bingham, freshman Miranda Strickland and Davis raced for the Cougars.

The last race of the morning session was the third/fourth varsity eights. The Cougars’ third and fourth varsity eight took first and second place at 7:19.66 and 7:25.77.

Rowing for the Cougars third varsity eight was seniors Jill Hannink, Hunter Jones, juniors Mahal Johnson, Miranda Armstrong, sophomores Shannon Mackenzie (coxswain), Grace Arnis, Sara Brevick, freshmen Gabrielle Rector and Sue Yu.

Rowing for the Cougars fourth varsity eight was junior Codi Swenson, sophomores Sophia Rogers, Rachael Christman, freshmen Paige Schoppe (coxswain), Ella Cowan de Wolf, Samantha Eilers, Linnea Davison and Madeline Soran.

In the afternoon session, No. 1 University of Washington dominated and took first place in every race.

The Huskies took first place in the second varsity four with a time of 7:17.14. It took the Cougars 46 additional seconds to cross the line for second place.

For the varsity four race, the Huskies’ lead was cut down to 16.54 seconds by UCLA. UW crossed the line at 7:17.80, and the Bruins took second at 7:34.34.

The Huskies maintained a similar lead in the second varsity eight race and the varsity four race. The Huskies crossed the finish line at 6:29.44 while the Cougars came in second around 18 seconds later.

The varsity eight was the last race of the day and, which UW won. They would cross the finish line at 6:38.06, followed by the Cougars seven seconds later.

The WSU women’s rowing team’s next invite will be on April 22-23 in Clemson, South Carolina, for the Clemson Invite.
