RTOP premieres ‘Mamma Mia!’ this spring
Singing, dancing, ABBA music are sure to entertain; local performers star in famed Broadway production
April 3, 2019
The Regional Theatre of the Palouse (RTOP) is putting on a production of the Broadway musical “Mamma Mia!” from April 3 to April 14.
The story of “Mamma Mia!” follows Sophie Sheridan, who is about to get married on an island off the coast of Greece. By reading her mother’s diary, Sophie finds out her father is one of three different men. She then invites all three of them to the island and her wedding to identify which one is her father.
“’Mamma Mia!’ is a romantic comedy that contrasts the dreams of a 70s girl and a 90s girl,” said RTOP Associate Director Michael Todd. “It is really comedic seeing all three potential dads there, not knowing why.”
The original Broadway play has been nominated for and received a number of awards. It was nominated for five different Tony awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical and Best Orchestrations.
“What is unique about this production, is there are subtle nuances of seeing a performance live,” Todd said.
Todd said they’ve double-cast several of the key characters, which means different actors will alternate the characters on different nights. Todd said this allows audiences to see the different interpretations of characterization.
RTOP casts local residents in these roles, many who will likely be recognizable to those in attendance. The cast performs a fun show with lots of musical entertainment.
“This is a show that you are going to want to be out of your seat dancing, so we provided for that,” Todd said. “So, you should take advantage of the standing room.”
The musical features music from the band ABBA, highlighting the musical themes of the 70s. Some of the most recognizable songs that are included are “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trouper” and “Honey, Honey.”
The Regional Theater of the Palouse will be putting on the performance of ‘Mamma Mia!’ for most of early April. Ticket information can be found by visiting the Box Office, calling in or visiting the RTOP website.
“So many people have fallen in love with the characters and timely music of ABBA, we know you are going to love the show,” Todd said. “It is a riot.”
