WSU women’s basketball sets off for final road swing

From staff reports

Looking to rebound from a home sweep at the hands of the Arizona schools, the WSU women’s basketball team hits the road one final time for a set of games against USC and UCLA.

The Cougars (10-15, 5-9) most recently lost to Arizona 70-62 on Sunday despite redshirt sophomore forward Nike McClure’s program record-setting seven-block effort. WSU lead by more than 10 points in the first half but ultimately succumbed to Arizona’s athletic post players.

WSU was also out-rebounded 42-30 by the Wildcats and shot just 60 percent (15-25) from the foul line.

WSU recorded its first sweep of the Southern California schools in January for the first time in 21 years, after upsetting then-No. 8 UCLA 82-73 on Jan. 6 behind a 33-point effort from freshman guard Chanelle Molina, and then knocking off USC 74-57 two days later.

The Cougars head to the Galen Center first to face USC on Friday.

Junior forward Kristen Simon leads the Trojans (13-12, 4-10) offensively, averaging a team-best 14.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Collectively, USC shoots .427 percent from the floor and averages 67.6 points per game. Behind its pressing defense, the Trojans upset conference-leading No. 9 Oregon State on Friday 73-50. WSU has won five of its last eight meetings with the Trojans.

WSU heads to Pasadena, California, on Sunday to take on a Bruins squad reeling from a sweep last weekend at the hands of the Oregon schools. UCLA (18-7, 9-5) ranks second in the Pac-12 conference in scoring and third in free throw percentage (.713). Comparatively, WSU ranks sixth in the Pac-12 in three-point percentage (.321), while the Bruins are 10th (.294).

The Cougars tip off against USC at 6 p.m. on Friday and then play UCLA at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
